6th Grade Syllabus

 

Course Objectives:

1st 9 wks:

                Goal 1:  Understand the properties of waves and wavelike property of energy in earthquakes, light, sound and thermal.

                Goal 2:  Understand the structure, classifications and physical properties of matter.

                Goal 3:  Understand characteristics of energy transfer and interactions of matter and energy

2nd 9 wks:

                Goal 4:  Understand the earth/moon/sun system, and the properties, structures, and predictable motions of celestial bodies in the universe.

3rd 9 wks:

                Goal 5:   Understand the structure of the earth and how interactions of constructive and destructive forces have resulted in changes in the surface of the Earth over time and the effects of the lithosphere on humans.

4th 9 wks:

                Goal 6:     Understand the structures, processes and behaviors of plants that enable them to survive and reproduce.

                Goal 7:     Understand the flow of energy through ecosystems and the responses of populations to the biotic and abiotic factores in their environment. 





7th Grade Syllabus

Course Objectives:

1st 9 wks:

                Goal 1:  Understand the cycling of matter (water and gases) in and out of the atmosphere as it relates to the Earth, weather and climate, the effects of the atmosphere on humans.

2nd 9 wks: 

                Goal 2:  Understand the relationship of the mechanisms of cellular reproduction, patterns of inheritance and external factors to potential variation among offspring.

3nd 9 wks:

                Goal 3:  Understand the processes, structures and functions of living organisms that enable them to survive, reproduce, and carry out the basic functions of life. (Human body systems).

4th 9 wks:

                Goal 4:     Understand the forms of energy, energy transfer and transformation, and conservation in mechanical systems.

                Goal 5:       Understand the effects of forces on motion, and the graphical representation of motion.  





8th Grade Syllabus

Course Objectives:

1st 9 wks:

                Goal 1:  Understand the properties of matter, classify matter as elements, compounds or mixtures, periodic table of elements, compare physical changes to chemical changes, law of conservation of mass (chemical equations).

Goal 2:    Explain the environmental implications of energy resources.

2nd 9 wks:

                Goal 3:  Understand the history of the Earth and its life forms, fossils, rock layers, carbon dating

                Goal 4:     Understand the hydrosphere (water cycle) and the impact of humans on local systems, the effect of the hydrosphere on humans

3rd 9 wks:

                Goal 5:      Understand how organisms interact with biotic and abiotic components of the environment, ecosystems, flow of energy in food webs.

                Goal 6:     Understand the hazards caused by diseases that affect living organisms.

                Goal 7:      Understand how biotechnology is used to affect living organisms.

4th 9 wks:

                Goal 8:  Understand how food provides the energy and molecules for building materials, growth and survival of all organisms

                Goal 9:  Understand the evolution of organisms and landforms based on evidence, theories and processes that impact the Earth over time, geology, fossils, genetics and adaptations.
