8th Grade Syllabus




This year we will be using various resources to accomplish the following:


Key Ideas and Details


-         Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as making inferences.


-         Determine the theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details.


-         Write a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.


-         Describe how a particular story’s plot unfolds in a series of events as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.


Craft and Structure


-         Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text,including figurative and connotative meanings


-         Analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone


-         Analyze how a particular sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot.


-         Explain how an author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text.


                                          Writing and Grammar


-         Students will use oral language, written language, and media and technology for expressive, informational, argumentative, critical, and literary purposes as outlined in the Common Core/Anchor Standards for Grade 8.  Student will also explore the structure of language and study grammatical rules in order to speak and write effectively.



The writing assignments will include:


·       Argumentative Essay:  Student will support a claim using evidence to support details


·       Evaluative Essay:  Student will select an editorial and evaluate stance of author


·       Informational Essay:  Student will convey a particular idea, concept, or information


·       Narrative Essay:  Student will write a memoir or describe a memorable experience)



Required Classroom Materials:


College ruled notebook paper

Three ring binder




Literature book

A positive attitude



Students will be graded through the following assessment techniques:

Daily classroom participation and homework (Do Now Activities/Bell Work)

Reading activities

Writing assignments

Objective quizzes and unit tests /essay tests

Unannounced quizzes and tests

Oral presentations (group and individual)

Group projects and assignments


Grading Policy:

A = 93 – 100

B = 92-85

C = 84-77

D = 76- 70


Absences and Make-up Work:

All students will be given the opportunity to make up work they missed on days they were absent from school. This also includes suspension days as well.
